It was released by Columbia Records on August 31, 1993. The album consists of ballads written mainly by Carey and Walter Afanasieff, with whom she previously worked on Emotions (1991), as well as several dance tracks. While working on the album, Carey wanted to expand her audience by choosing a more pop-oriented/RB-oriented sound. During this time, she experimented with various musical instruments, which led to the fact that the sound of the album began to differ from the two previous, more modern works.  Upon its release, Music Box received generally mixed reviews from music critics. The album was criticized for Carey's softer and more laid-back tone compared to her previous works.
