It was the first release of the Vertigo Records album, which reached number 15 in the UK Albums chart in 1969. The album peaked at number 18 in Australia in 1970.

The release is characterized by a large number of dance-oriented tracks, but it is wrong to define the genre of the album as exclusively "disco"; for example, the song "Does Your Mother Know" has quite definite rock motifs. The work on the album went on for more than a year, and during this time the participants had accumulated more material than what they managed to put on the album. Among the works of that period published much later, it is worth mentioning the composition Dream World, included as a bonus track on the 2010 reissue. In 1981, the album "Voulez-Vous" was released in the USSR by the company "Melody" and became the last numbered album "ABBA", released in the Soviet Union. Bill Fehilly is the band's manager, who died shortly before in a plane crash. The musicians admitted that without his help, Nazareth would never have crossed the borders of England — let alone other countries. Play ’n’ the Game, like the previous album, went unnoticed in the UK, while the band was very popular in Canada, where Nazareth received about 50 gold and platinum records throughout the 1970s.
