Full release title: Mahalia Barnes / The Soul Mates featuring Joe Bonamassa "OOH YEA (The Betty Davis Songbook)". The album was recorded over three days at Freight Train Studios in Sydney, Australia, "live", without overdubs. The hard groove and riffs (Bonamassa immediately declares his presence) and the sharp piercing vocals in the title track If I'm In Luck I Might Get Picked Up turn into a love story - soul In The Meantime with a dominant organ and, again, a prolonged solo by Bonamassa. The funky He Was A Big Freak gives Mahalia the opportunity to show all her vocal capabilities. The album is made up of covers of songs by Betty Davis, Miles Davis' wife, recorded in the early 70s. Betty met Miles Davis in the late 60s and introduced him to the world of psychedelic rock, introduced him to Jimi Hendrix.
