It was adapted from the play "Porgy" by Dorothy Hayward and Dubose Hayward, which is itself an adaptation of the 1925 novel of the same name by Dubose Hayward. Porgy and Bess was first performed in Boston on September 30, 1935, before moving to Broadway in New York.[1] It featured a cast of classically trained African-American singers—a bold artistic choice at the time. After an initially unpopular public reception, the 1976 production of the Houston Grand Opera brought her new popularity, and she is now one of the most famous and frequently performed operas. In 1976, Ray Charles and Cleo Lane recorded an album of excerpts for RCA Victor, in which the two of them performed several roles. The album was arranged and conducted by Frank De Vol. It featured Joe Sample's organ, Harry Edison's trumpet, and guitar work by Joe Pass and Lee Ritenour. This is the first album after the split of the band in early 1987, "Hero of Asphalt" is also the first album officially released by "Melody", the two previous albums at that time existed and were distributed as tape albums only on tape cassettes. The album was a great success, its sales exceeded 1 million copies (which in the United States corresponds to the platinum status), but the exact circulation is unknown even to the company "Melody", although, according to her, at least 1.5 million records were printed.On this album, for the first time, all the lyrics were written by Margarita Pushkina, and Alexander Elin, who wrote the lyrics to previous albums, left for the Master group and did not work with Aria until 2001.In 2008, a concert tour was held in honor of the 20th anniversary of the album, which resulted in the release of a double live album and a concert video "Hero of Asphalt XX years".
