The album is dedicated to the songs of the composer Jerome Kern. This was the second series of collections of Fitzgerald songs organized by Riddle; their previous joint project was her book of George and Ira Gershwin songs in 1959. Fitzgerald and Riddle also recorded two albums of standards in 1962: "Ella Swings Brightly with Nelson" and "Ella Swings Softly with Nelson".
It was the seventh and penultimate album in a series of Fitzgerald songs written by musical theater composers; it was preceded by the 1961 album "Ella Fitzgerald sings a Book of Songs by Harold Arlen", and then "Ella Fitzgerald sings a book of songs by Johnny Mercer" in 1964. Awarded four and a half stars by Down Beat magazine in 1963.
