It was originally released in Scandinavia on November 17, 1975 and in other parts of the world in 1976, notably in the UK on April 10 and September 18 in the USA and Canada. The release of Greatest Hits coincided with the beginning of ABBA's huge popularity in the UK in the second half of the 1970s, becoming the first of eight consecutive number one albums for the band. It spent eleven consecutive weeks at the top of the UK Albums Chart and became the best-selling album of 1976 and the second best-selling album of the 1970s. As of July 2016, it is the 46th best-selling album of all time in the UK, with sales of over 2.6 million Greatest Hits was released in the USA and Canada in September 1976, but record sales peaked only in April 1977, when the song "Dancing Queen" took first place in both countries. "Dancing Queen" was not included in the Greatest Hits, but it was the lead single from the new studio album Arrival, and it aroused interest in the ABBA back catalog. It was his first album after the breakup of his band the Bluesbreakers in May 1968,[3] although others claim it was July 14, 1968. It was also his last album with Decca before moving to Polydor.John Mayall sings and plays harmonica, organ and guitar on the album. The other band members are a young Mick Taylor (guitar), Colin Allen (drums) and Steven Thompson (bass). Guitarist Peter Green is featured in the track "First Time Alone". The engineer was Derek Varnals. All the songs on the album were written by Mayall.The album's title comes from Laurel Canyon, California, USA (in the Los Angeles area), where John Mayall subsequently lived from 1969 to 1979. This is an account of his visit there before moving to the United States on a more permanent basis. At that time, this area was loved by many musicians.
