It was the band's first album featuring guitarist Steve Howe, who replaced Peter Banks in 1970, as well as their last album featuring keyboardist Tony Kaye until the album 90125 in 1983.The album was a critical success and became a major commercial breakthrough for Yes, who risked being dropped by Atlantic due to the commercial failures of their first two albums. ATLANTIS-SAME-1972-FIRST PRESS GERMANY-VERTIGO-6360609. A rare original continuation of the cult prog group FRUMPY. Atlantis was formed at the end of the summer of 1972 by Inga Rumpf (vocals), Jean-Jacques Kravets (keyboards) and Karl-Heinz Schott (bass). These musicians previously played in the band Frumpy. The founding members also included guitarist Frank Dees and drummer Kurt Kress (formerly of the band Emergency). After several live performances in Germany, the first LP was released at Island Records Studio in London, which was widely recognized, especially in the United States, where Rumpf's bluesy vocals were appreciated. Diz and Kress left the band after recording. For a four-week tour of England with Procol Harum and Traffic, George Meyer joined Atlantis as guitarist and Udo Lindenberg joined Atlantis as drummer. After the tour, they were replaced by Dieter Bornschlegel (who had previously worked with the band Dreamtorte) and Ringo Funk (who had previously worked with Geronimo), with whom the second album It's Getting Better (1973) was recorded. ...more

The album cover was drawn by Rodney Matthews, a famous English fantasy illustrator who created covers for the works of many other artists (Scorpions, Thin Lizzy and others) The name of the disc is borrowed from the novel "No Mean City" (1935) by Alexander MacArthur and Kingsley Long. With this album, the band's sound has become heavier, given the addition of guitarist Zal Cleminson from Sensational Alex Harvey Band. The popularity of the album allowed the band to perform with several big names, such as Thin Lizzy, on their 1978/79 tour. ...more
