It was recorded at Mountain Studios in Montreux, Switzerland, and at the Power Station in New York City from September to November 1986. The album was produced by Bowie together with David Richards, and also with the participation of Peter Frampton on guitar. Musically, Never Let Me Down was characterized as pop rock, art rock and hard rock; Bowie himself considered this album a return to rock and roll.
