The album was released by Capitol Records on July 15, 1973 and became RIAA gold a month after its release. Two singles were released from the album. The first single, "We're an American Band", was released on July 2, 1973, and the second, "Walk Like a Man", was released on October 29, 1973. The album ranks 200th in the ranking of 200 albums of all time by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM).

Bless It Pointed Little Head is a Jefferson Airplane album recorded live at Fillmore East and West in the fall of 1968 and released in 1969 as RCA Victor LSP-4133. Five songs from the album did not appear on any of the band's previous studio recordings. Many of the Airplane's recordings on the album were longer than their studio performances. The performance emphasized their vocal harmony and showed a tougher rock band. Guitar and bass parts were deeper in their construction, revealing complex instrumental parts.
