Gabriel and Ezrin gathered musicians, including guitarist Robert Fripp and his future King Crimson bandmate Tony Levin on bass. After the release of the album, Gabriel began touring with a group of seven people under his own name. The album reached # 7 in the UK and # 38 in the US. This album is often referred to as either Peter Gabriel I or Car, referring to the album cover by London-based artist Peter Christopherson.
