WAITS, TOM-SWORDFISHTROMBONE-1983-THE FIRST PRESS OF GERMANY-ISLAND-205774 A rare German original of the eighth album from the master of tavern blues. Swordfishtrombones is the eighth studio album by singer-songwriter Tom Waits, released in 1983 on Island Records. It was the first album that Waits released himself. Stylistically different from his previous albums, Swordfishtrombones moves away from traditional piano songwriting towards unusual instrumentation and a somewhat more abstract and experimental rock approach. The cover is a photo of Michael A. Russavin, in which Waits is depicted with actors Angelo Rossitto and Lee Colima. The album reached number 164 on the Billboard Pop Albums and 200 Albums charts. It was ranked 2nd among the "Albums of the Year" for 1983 by NME In 1989, Spin named Swordfishtrombones the second greatest album of all time. In 2006, Company Q placed the album at number 36 on their list of "The 40 Best Albums of the 80s." Pitchfork listed Swordfishtrombones as the 11th best album of the 1980s. The album contains a darker and darker sound than its predecessor Violator, largely influenced by the alternative and grunge scene in the US. Songs of Faith and Devotion reached high positions in most country charts and also became the first Depeche Mode album to debut on the chart in both the UK and the US. He made a bet with Lennon that the song would be able to take first place in the American hit parade (which was previously not possible for any one single solo Lennon). If this would have happened, Lennon was required to attend the Elton John concert.
