His professional music career began when he replaced Ringo Starr in the band Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, a popular Liverpool band at the time. He subsequently played and recorded with The Artwoods, and became a member of the John Mayall Bluesbreakers. After that, he formed his own band "The Keef Hartley (Big) Band", whose style included elements of jazz, blues, rock and roll.
