His professional music career began when he replaced Ringo Starr in the band Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, a popular Liverpool band at the time. He subsequently played and recorded with The Artwoods, and became a member of the John Mayall Bluesbreakers. After that, he formed his own band "The Keef Hartley (Big) Band", whose style included elements of jazz, blues, rock and roll. The band performed at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and released 4 popular albums including Halfbreed and The Battle of North West Six.
