The album is compiled of reworked tracks from the group's demo Purest Feeling, as well as songs that were recorded later. Three songs from the album released as singles; the most successful, "Head Like a Hole", performed in the concerts so far. Pretty Hate Machine became one of the first independent disks, which reached platinum certification. 12 may 2003 the American recording industry Association awarded the album a triple platinum status over three million copies sold in the US.
