Steve MARRIOTT was founded by Humble Pie in 1968 with Greg Ridley, Peter Frampton and Jerry Shirley. Their debut single "Natural Born Boogie" became a hit in the singles chart in the UK and was accompanied by the album as Safe as Yesterday Is, which climbed to sixteenth place in the charts of albums in the UK. Their second album, Town and Country was released in the UK in 1969 when the band was absent in his first U.S. tour. Fool's Mate is the debut solo album by Peter Hammill of progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator .The album was recorded in 1971, in the midst of one of the most productive periods of Van der Graaf Generator. Among the guest musicians of this album were members of Van der Graaf Generator , the members of his label mates Lindisfarne, and guitarist Robert Fripp .The British music press was very positive on Fool's Mate . Melody Maker saw it as "one of the albums of the year". The cover was designed by Paul Whitehead who at the time was the favourite cover artist for Van der Graaf Generator and a fellow of the Charisma band Genesis .
