In the UK, the album took first place and was sold in the amount of 1 500 000 copies (four times platinum), which made it the most selling album. In Europe the album was sold in the amount of 7 000 000 copies

Fool's Mate is the debut solo album by Peter Hammill of progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator .The album was recorded in 1971, in the midst of one of the most productive periods of Van der Graaf Generator. Among the guest musicians of this album were members of Van der Graaf Generator , the members of his label mates Lindisfarne, and guitarist Robert Fripp .The British music press was very positive on Fool's Mate . Melody Maker saw it as "one of the albums of the year". The cover was designed by Paul Whitehead who at the time was the favourite cover artist for Van der Graaf Generator and a fellow of the Charisma band Genesis .
