The music on this album was written as the soundtrack for the BBC documentary series The Celts (1986). The CD was recorded in 1986 but not published until 1987, while there was the premiere of the series The Celts. First, the album was released by the BBC in the UK under her own label, then in North America under the label of Atlantic Records. In 1992 an updated and redesigned version of the album was released by Warner Music under the name the Celts.
