The album was recorded over eight months and five different sessions, arranged by Nelson Riddle.Nelson Riddle commented that the structure of popular songs did not lend itself to an arrangement in the style of a classical string quartet, and felt that he had not actually achieved what he had hoped for. However, when the album was released, it was highly praised by critics, and as Riddle remarked, "Sinatra loved it!".
